Therapy for Individuals
HUMANISTIC/PERSON-CENTERED THERAPY
We oftentimes lean toward humanistic therapy by taking the role of facilitator and providing a comfortable environment and a listening ear. This is a more gentle approach than driving or directing people toward recovery.
JUNGIAN APPROACH THERAPY
A Jungian approach to therapy is the understanding that guidance for what we need to function fully comes from within ourselves. It is grounded in the idea that there is a source of symbolic wisdom within each of our psyches that contains knowledge beyond what we know consciously. We work with individuals to access this wisdom that is held deeply within and to apply it in a healing way through sandplay and expressive arts.
EXPRESSIVE ARTS
Expressive arts therapy is often a very helpful way for people to access and heal/witness deep pain or other emotional trauma. Barbara is registered as an expressive arts therapist (REAT) and frequently works with individuals through the expression of imagination in a creative work (such as painting, drawing, etc) and then integrates and processes the issues that are raised.
Specialized Therapy
EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR)
As a Certified EMDR Therapist, Barbara approaches treatment with EMDR as an integrative psychotherapeutic approach. EMDR treats PTSD and alleviates human suffering on a deeper level. Barbara likes to assist individuals to fulfill their potential for development while minimizing risks of harm in its application. As a Certified EMDR Therapist, she helps you to achieve a certain level of stability with comprehensive treatment safely, effectively and efficiently.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Barbara has undergone extensive training in helping people with a range of disabilities including: intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum, cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, and seizure disorder. She works with individuals and families of special needs children and adults.
Therapy for Families
There are many difficulties that can arise within family relationships and it is usually of great benefit to meet with an ‘impartial observer’ to discuss and find a way of resolving problems. During therapy, everyone’s voice is heard and a respectful dialogue occurs. Issues are sifted through and, using various analytic approaches, a healing mechanism is set in place. There are many effective tools and as a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) Barbara is skilled to guide families along a path of healing.
